About Mountaineer Wildlife Management Area

Mountaineer Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a 18,400-acre protected tract located in Mason and Jackson Counties, West Virginia, along the Ohio River. This WMA is composed of rolling hills, bottomland forests, grasslands, and riverine wetlands, providing diverse habitats for a wide range of wildlife species. It is particularly known for supporting populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrel, waterfowl, and various small game species. The area’s proximity to the Ohio River adds important riparian habitat and opportunities for fishing and waterfowl hunting. Established and managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the Mountaineer WMA aims to balance wildlife conservation with public use, allowing for hunting, bird watching, hiking, and camping. The terrain is generally gentle, making it accessible year-round, with several parking areas and unpaved roads for management and visitor access. Though less developed than state parks, Mountaineer WMA appeals strongly to hunters and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a natural environment with opportunities for wildlife observation and quiet recreation. The area is especially popular during hunting seasons in fall and winter, while the spring and summer attract birders and anglers. Nearby riverfront provides additional scenic value, and the WMA’s mixed habitat types support rich biodiversity amidst largely rural surroundings. Its location near communities such as Point Pleasant enhances visitor accessibility while maintaining a predominantly natural character.
